capoeira in londrina, brasil

January 5, 2009 · 1 Comment

travel and photography is one beautiful combination! this past summer i traveled to brazil to study brazilian culture and capoeira. for those of your that don’t know, capoeira is a brazilian martial arts that is sometimes referred to as dance fighting (wikipedia.org/wiki/Capoeira). capoeira incorporates martial arts with music, dance, and acrobatics (www.ithaca.edu/capoeira/pages/history.html). it was such a powerful and moving experience to see how fully committed and passionate these capoeiristas are (not to mention they are unbelievable athletes)…and that is what i set out to capture in my photos. sports photography presents a great many challenges that always inspire me to come back for more!

i had 4 images from my brazil trip on display in november at the ariodante gallery in new orleans (www.ariodantegallery.com). january 9, 2009, the completed show (15 total images) will be on display at the Grupo Maculele New Orleans Academy for a one-night exhibition from 6-9 pm (bestofneworleans.com). here are a few of my favorites from the show.
